Each state runs its own racing, but HRA is the central link.
Who we are
Harness Racing Australia (HRA) is the national body for the sport, established in 1974 and renamed in 2008. It’s members are limited to the six State Controlling Bodies and the six Principal Clubs.
Originally created to run the Australian Trotting Stud Book on behalf of its members, including maintaining a Central Register of Names and controlling and enforcing the Australian Harness Racing Rules (AHRR) HRA now leads national coordination— ensuring consistent rules, policies, feature race calendars and handicapping systems, whilst still also managing the stud book, including imports, exports, naming and registrations.
HRA also represents Australia nationally as a member of Animal Health Australia and internationally as a member of the International Trotting Association. HRA also oversees two of the biggest races in Australia, the time-honored Inter Dominion and world’s richest harness race, The Eureka.
Due to the State/Federal political system, each State Controlling Body administers harness racing within its own State jurisdiction, but HRA is the central link that keeps the industry aligned, promoted and progressing nationwide.
